Ponteland won the coin toss to get the game under way.Ponteland playing from left to right in the 1st half. A ball over the top from Blue Star saw the Ponteland defence clear away in the opening exchanges.
Ponteland quickly won a free kick inside there own half from a foul and led to an early attack on the Blue Star goal which was dealt with quickly and the ball was cleared into midfield and Ponteland quickly regained possession and played out from midfield.
Blue Star battled to win the ball from Ponteland and the ball was whipped out wide only to be judged to be offside.
Ponteland were playing a passing game from the back which led to them winning a free kick inside the Blue Star half and was cleared by the Star defence in a game that was being bogged down in midfield in the early exchanges.
Ponteland then won possession and quickly went on the attack a through ball was played only for McCafferty to gather and created a chance for Star to go on the offensive but came to no success as the ball was cleared.
Star coming under a little more pressure had to rely on McCafferty once again having to deny Ponteland taking the lead with an excellent save to keep the score at 0-0.
Ponteland on 11 minutes won a free kick in the Blue Star half,the ball was floated in and the referee blew his whistle and awarded Ponteland a penalty for handball.The penalty was saved by McCafferty only for the rebound to be converted by Pontelands Calvert 1-0 Ponteland.
After the penalty was converted Blue Star went on the offensive pressing for that equaliser and a cross field ball was cleared by the Ponteland full back.
As the half went on Blue Star began to pressure Ponteland with some possession play attacking the flanks, Ponteland attacked on the counter and were awarded a free kick outside the area and whipped in a ball that was hooked away by the defence.
Blue Star looked to play the ball to Andrew Bulford however the ball was intercepted and Ponteland played a through ball with the full back being caught on the wronside of his man and a free kick was awarded to the visitors and was quickly taken and the Ponteland attacker cut inside and saw his effort curl wide of the post.
As the half continued an injury to the Ponteland centre half saw a change in personnel for the visitors, by this time the game was becoming very scrappy in the middle of the park and both sides were struggling to get a foot hold in the game.
In the latter stages of the first half the visitors were awarded a second penalty and with McCafferty in the Blue Star goal already having saved a penalty earlier on in the half could he produce another fine save and to the delight of the crowd her performed heroics again saving from the spot to the excitement of the home supporters
At the other end Blue Star saw a penalty awarded for handball in the area. Striker Andrew Bulford stepped up to level the game however the penalty was saved, however the linesman was waving his flag for what appeared to be an encroachment.
Star quickly regained possession after the throw in and saw a header go close with claims of an equaliser which the referee quickly turned away and waved play on. Star were beginning to gather momentum and pressured the Ponteland defence with some good passagesa of play.
The half time whistle blew after what was a scrappy half of football and a half that lacked that little extra bit of quality, both teams at times were struggling with the conditions but would need to adapt too as the game went on.
Blue star were pushing for an equaliser and saw them win a corner after a great through ball only to see the corner cleared and a counter from the opposition which came to nothing.
As the half was in its early stages both sides had periods of dominance without really troubling each other defensively. Star regained possession and had good periods off play which tested the Posnteland keeper who turned the ball around his post to award the home side a corner which cleared the bar.
Blue Star were pushing for that illusive equaliser and on 66 minutes got the goal they had been pushing for with a tidy finish from Darren Young.
The game got back underway and Pontelands pacey wingers were causing problems down the left hand side and saw the Blue Star full back booked for a foul.
Ponteland were now in the ascendency and were applying pressure and saw a shot go over the bar. The visitors were now pushing for a 2nd goal and Blue Star were having to be resolute defensively and were working hard to disrupt the visitors attacking threat.
Ponteland again had an opportunity to go ahead and once again McCafferty was at full stretch to deny the visitors taking the lead.
On 70 minutes the visitors took the lead through so good build up play and saw Jefferson convert his chance, Blue Star were now chasing the game and battled to get the equaliser and saw a couple of opportunities go begging.
Blue Star pressed and with the clock running down and saw a chance go begging towards the end of the game as they fell to a home defeat on the return to football at Scotswood.
