Newcastle Blue Star 0 - 0 Easington Colliery - 06.11.26

Blue Star play out a stalemate at home in front of a bumper crowd.
By Harry Tindall
Coming off the back of three long away trips, Blue Star were looking to put an end to a poor run of form under the lights at home. The 1,264 in attendance marked Blue Star’s biggest crowd of the season, with many staying on for a post-match firework display. The away side were flying high in the table but also on a run of three games without a win and looking to build back some consistency.
Before kick-off the players and fans showed their respects to the fallen as the last post played, followed by a minute’s silence.
After a quiet start to the game, it was Blue Star who had the first attempt on target of the game. Zych was fouled on the right wing and won a free kick which was delivered by Danny Anderson onto MacLeod’s head, but his attempt was saved comfortably by Atkinson between the sticks.
Moving closer to the half an hour mark, there were still limited chances from both sides so far in a closely contested game.
Easington’s first real chance of the game arrived when Adamson threaded a ball through to Hird, but Anderson got down well to deny him with his legs.
Minutes later, Easington broke through after Orrell’s free kick was intercepted, Adamson started a sharp attack and after some quick passing football, Adamson was played through to finish off the move but his shot trickled wide of the far post. This would prove to be the best chance of the half.
It was all square at the break with the game all to play for in the second half.
The second half began at the same tempo as the first, with neither keeper having much of a test. Blue Star were now attacking the terrace, and a goal would be much to the delight of the buoyant home contingent.
Joe Atkinson was forced into his first real test of the night at the half way mark in the second half after he denied McClen’s strike, low into the left corner.
Blue Star were starting to control the ball but struggling to break down a well organised Easington back line. As a result, Danny Anderson tried his luck from distance, but his powerful strike was caught routinely by the keeper.
In injury time, Dylan Elliot lifted a free kick into the penalty area which resulted in a goal mouth scramble, but Eggleston managed to hook it away and erode any danger.
That would be that as the full-time whistle blew and it was honours even at the KD Stadium. A game that was not full of chances but a hard fought point nonetheless, against a strong Easington side. Errington returned from a lengthy injury and slotted in seamlessly, with Blue Star keeping their first clean sheet since August. All focus turns to next Saturday as Blue Star are on the road once again, this time at Crook Town.
