Another Northern Alliance Premier Division fixture for Blue Star to deal with last Saturday and in the end, it was the same positive outcome than the previous nine. Victory over Newcastle Chemfica is now in the history books, and it also means a tenth successive league win in a row.
While it was a victory that certainly had to be earned, especially by the time Chemfica had put their home advantage to early use. The hosts ahead at the interval, the visitors having choice words for each other on the field of play.
The scoreline was certainly a surprise at the break, there were no such surprises in the second half. Be it character, additional quality, or a mixture of these two attributes, Blue Star would find three quickfire goals to change the complexion of the game.
Three quickfire goals that eventually led to three more points on the board. Not only that, but the result has put Brian Smith’s men 14 points clear at the top – albeit having played three games more than Burradon & New Fordley in second.
Even though our nearest challengers have a trio of games in hand, they still have to be played in a rather tight scheduling window and points on the board are much more likely to win you a league title.
A title that could be won as early as Monday April 24th. The stage is looking set for a season defining clash with Burradon at Scotswood but there is a potential roadblock that needs to be cleared first and that is Wednesday’s visit of Seaton Delaval.
The two teams met only recently within the confines of the Challenge Cup final and although a one-off fixture such as this can sometimes throw the formbook out of the window, Seaton Delaval were blown away in no time at all.
However, that does not mean they can be taken for granted in midweek. The temptation will be to look straight ahead to Monday’s potential title winning clash, but temptation has a habit of casting a team astray.
Something which sets up Wednesday’s clash rather nicely indeed. A warm welcome goes out to the traveling Seaton Delaval team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
