After a quartet of matches on the road, Newcastle Blue Star return to Scotswood in just a few hours and although the KD Stadium will be familiar territory, a lack of home league win thus far has been a rather unfamiliar feeling this season.

However, a first league win was collected a week ago and after getting the better of Blyth Town on the Tuesday, Paul Brayson and his players made the trip to Shildon on Saturday while looking for back-to-back victories.

Unfortunately for Blue Star, that search would be unfulfilled and after a rather chaotic first half saw a total of five goals added to the scoresheet, it was hosts Shildon who went into the break with a narrow advantage to their name.

3-2 up after 45 frenzied minutes and with so much attacking endeavour for both sides being rewarded in the best possible way, there was always a sense that the second half was highly unlikely to finish with no increase to either score.

While that sense ultimately proved to be correct, it was Shildon who secured all three points thanks to a late strike and with last season’s runners-up securing their third league win of the season, Blue Star are still searching for their second.

With six games of the league campaign now under their belt, you can start to draw patterns around Blue Star’s play and although 12 total goals scored at an average of two per game is not to be sniffed at, conceding 17 – the most in the league, is undoubtedly of greater concern.

For every two that are scored, Blue Star are conceding almost three on average and it is this statistic that tonight’s visitors Crook Town will be keen to exploit as they also are searching for a second league win of the season.
