It only takes a handful of successive wins to change the complexion of any league campaign and its fair to say that after recording three maximums in as many games, Newcastle Blue Star’s outlook is starting to look positive once again.
With victories over Northallerton and Newcastle Benfield recently recorded, Friday night saw Marc Nash and his players take a trip to Horden and with the promoted outfit playing the role of surprise outfit at the start of the season, they would be in for something of a surprise themselves.
A surprise to Friday’s hosts but not to their visitors and with Newcastle Blue Star threatening over the past few weeks to truly put a team to the sword, it was Horden who found their early momentum decapitated.
Especially as hitman Dan Lanning was at his sharpest and with the forward opening the scoring midway through the first half, his goal set the tempo for Blue Star to ease through the gears on the way to further attacking joy.
Joy that came in the form of an additional Nathan Kidd double and a Kieran Galbraith finish from close range. Three further goals as the Scotswood outfit mopped up three more points to continue their climb up the league ladder.
A climb that puts them firmly in the chasing pack as far as playoff places are concerned but also a chasing pack that Blue Star will soon want to leave behind and the way to achieve further upward mobility is by extending their current winning streak in the league.
That winning streak will be put to the test by Marske United and although they won in Scotswood on the opening day of last season, their fortunes this time around have been less than favourable. Tonight’s visitors find themselves third bottom at present and need a win for far differing reasons.
Something which sets up this upcoming clash rather nicely. A warm welcome goes out to the visiting Marske team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
