Although the World Cup may have driven some interest over the summer months, it is the Northern League that pumps through the veins of supporters in this area and no sooner than six days after Spain earned global supremacy for a second time do Newcastle Blue Star return to action.
Paul Brayson’s men have been put through their paces in the off-season and although a handful of friendlies will have sharpened fitness over the past few weeks, there can be no substitute for the demands of a league programme.
One that last time out saw Blue Star pipped to the play-off process on the final weekend of the campaign and although there was disappointment in not reaching the top five, their momentum at the end of the season is not something that should be forgotten.
The fact that there were in playoff contention was only made possible after winning each of their last seven league outings but as any good player or manager knows, that run counts for nothing when a new season comes around.
Because for Blue Star and the other 20 teams in the league, the clock now resets to zero before another gruelling league campaign awaits and although there are plenty of points to be won, the first three are always some of the most important.
While it is important to note that the squad that finished the 2025/26 season will look slightly different to the one that takes to the field against Redcar Town this afternoon, as the KD Stadium outfit have seen a number of incomings and outgoings across the summer.
That will be of no surprise when you consider the operation of any non-league club but now it is down to those in Blue Star colours to make sure they are not foiled by a team who won last season’s Division Two title – a team that will look to make an impact in the top tier from the opening weekend.
Something which sets up this upcoming clash rather nicely. A warm welcome goes out to the visiting Redcar Town team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
