After suffering defeat to North Shields on Friday, there is little time to dwell on that outcome as Newcastle Blue Star are back in league action this evening with another opportunity to put three points on the board.

The 2-0 reverse at the weekend means Blue Star have now gone three league games without a victory and four in all competitions, a run that has interrupted the momentum built by three successive league wins earlier in the campaign.

There is no need to overstate that sequence of results but, with a quarter of the season now behind us, consistency needs to be found between now and Christmas if any genuine progress up the table is to be made.

The early weeks of a season can provide plenty of twists and turns and the Northern League Division One table remains capable of changing significantly from one weekend to the next, but points dropped now still need to be recovered somewhere down the line.

While those connected with Blue Star will hope that the line is drawn as early as this evening, especially as their last three outings in all competitions have failed to generate a goal at the KD Stadium.

No home comforts for Paul Brayson’s men but now the task for his players is to make life uncomfortable for tonight’s visitors. Playing that role is a Thornaby side who currently sit two places better off than Blue Star in ninth.

Thornaby also had to deal with the taste of defeat at the weekend, as their trip to Carlisle City saw them edged out in a five-goal thriller and although that game highlighted vulnerability at the back, their potency in attack should not be underestimated either.

Which creates a scenario where both teams will be earmarking this encounter as the one where a return to winning ways is found, meaning at least one outfit is going to end up disappointed at the final whistle.
