The third league game in less than a week for Newcastle Blue Star, the third successive home encounter of the new campaign and, with the phrase ‘third time lucky’ well known to many, the KD Stadium outfit will hope that is the case this evening.

After being thwarted on the opening day by Redcar Town, Blue Star were then foiled by Kendal Town on Tuesday night. The 3-2 defeat to the newly promoted outfit on Saturday was followed by an entertaining 3-3 draw in midweek.

Tuesday’s draw with Kendal means Blue Star are still searching for their first league victory of the campaign. Each time Paul Brayson’s men managed to find themselves ahead in the game, they were duly dragged back to stalemate by their Cumbrian counterparts.

A performance that once again showed a number of defensive shortcomings at important moments, the topic of game management once again as pertinent as it was just three days prior and for the second successive league game, Blue Star had conceded three league goals.

Admittedly the total of six goals conceded have been offset by five goals being scored at the other end but at the same time, Blue Star are not quite getting the rub of the green at present and this is highlighted by the solitary league point attached to their name.

Three fewer than tonight’s opponents Whickham and after being held to a draw at Marske on the opening day of the season, they followed that up with an emphatic 5-0 win at home to Carlisle City on Wednesday.

A result that sees them sit third in the table before tonight’s game gets underway, a win for the visitors would put them top for at least a few hours and although their third league game is an even tighter turnaround in terms of scheduling, they will be keen to continue their early momentum.
