Although Newcastle Blue Star’s early season calendar has scheduled dates across many different competitions, the focus from now until the end of the campaign is now firmly on what can be done in the Northern League.
With both FA Cup and Vase runs having come to an end, the shine of silverware sparkled again on Tuesday night in the shape of the Northumberland Senior Cup. However, Blue Star’s performance at home to North Shields was far from sparkling.
The visitors earning progress to the next round of the competition by virtue of a 2-0 win at the KD Stadium. Had they been more ruthless with the chances they created, that two could have easily been doubled.
Tuesday’s result not telling the full story but now it is time to close that chapter and look ahead to what is in front of them. Not only a trip to West Auckland this evening but also a stretch of games that include many fellow promotional hopefuls.
In the next month, Blue Star have to not only deal with West Auckland but also Guisborough, Whitley Bay and North Shields. Once these clashes have been contested, we will get a better idea of what the middle third of the campaign and beyond truly looks like.
With that said, what is on the horizon can wait for another few days as tonight’s trip to County Durham takes centre stage. Not only in a bid to put Tuesday’s cup exit behind them but more importantly return to winning ways in the league.
Only one point from the six on offer was collected in the fixtures against Kendal and Horden. For the chances that Marc Nash’s men had created, that was fair from a fair return but football has a habit of being unfair at the best of times.
Which is something that West Auckland are also highly aware of. Like Blue Star, they recently went to Kendal and found themselves ahead at half time. Also like Blue Star, they would eventually go home empty handed after a last minute penalty was converted by the hosts.
A result that puts Friday’s hosts 10th in the table before kick off this evening but with that said, 10 may be their magic number. 10 being the number of goals they put past Gateshead Rutherford in midweek in the Durham Cup and they will be keen to continue their recent attacking prowess.
Something which sets up this clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to West Auckland for the upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
