Whitley Bay vs Newcastle Blue Star (05/09/2026)

After a hard fought win at Yarm & Eaglescliffe seven days ago, Newcastle Blue Star found themselves on the other side when it comes to a defeat by the narrowest of margins. Their 1-0 win last Saturday was then mirrored by the opposite outcome on Tuesday when at home to Bishop Auckland.

Paul Brayson’s men welcomed the current Northern League Division One leaders to the KD Stadium in midweek and matched them stride for stride in the first 45 minutes as the two teams went back into their respective dressing rooms in a state of parity.

However, that parity was broken midway through the second half when Bishop Auckland headed themselves into the lead and with that being the game’s only goal, Blue Star’s only regret would have been not taking their own chances.

Had they done so, they would have taken all three points and sent out a big statement to the rest of the division. As it was, manager Brayson and his players were left at full time to think what might have been.

Tuesday’s result showing that sometimes there is no logic in football, a better performance that night than compared to victory at Yarm & Eaglescliffe just a few days before but nothing to show for their efforts, proving once again that football rarely follows the script.

But it also proves that no two games are the same and now Blue Star will look for the perfect response to Tuesday’s reverse as they make the relatively short journey to Hillheads Park to face local rivals Whitley Bay.

The last time Blue Star visited this ground it signalled the end of the 2025/26 season and their League Cup final defeat to North Shields. Now though, the venue is no longer neutral, they are stepping back into enemy territory.

Hosts Whitley Bay go into this weekend sitting third bottom in the league table but did pick up their second win of the season on Tuesday after an impressive 4-1 win at Redcar Town and they will be keen to use that result as a platform to surge up the standings.
