It only needs a couple of successive league wins to quickly change the fortunes of any football club and in the past 10 days or so, that is precisely what Newcastle Blue Star have managed to achieve for themselves.
Before their recent trip to Penrith, Blue Star were situated neatly within the middle of the Northern League Division One table and with loftier ambitions than just making up the numbers, only victories were going to help see those ambitions become a reality.
A 3-2 win at Penrith subsequently followed by a 1-0 win at home to Birtley Town last Friday and with Marc Nash’s men and last Friday’s opponents only recently sharing the points at The Arrowmark Home Improvements Stadium, it looked as if another 90 minutes of parity was soon to be recorded.
With the minutes left on the clock moving into single figures, Dan Lanning’s effort from inside the box cannoned off the inside of the post and invitingly into the goalmouth for Tom McIntyre to slam home.
His 81st minute strike eventually proving the difference at Scotswood and not only was it a second successive league win but a result that extends Blue Star’s current league unbeaten run to five matches.
Five unbeaten at present and in doing so, picking up 11 points from the last 15 on offer. Momentum being cultivated in terms of performance and that momentum has also seen the club move into the top six of the Northern League Division One table.
Sixth to be precise before Tuesday’s meeting at Whitley Bay and with the club possessing games in hand on all the five teams that sit above them, there is a quickfire opportunity to make further inroads on the fellow promotion hopefuls that sit above.
As for Tuesday’s hosts, they come into this game having also played 11 league games this season but 10 positions worse off than Blue Star. However, their last league outing saw them get the better of Newcastle Benfield by a goal to nil and they will be keen to build on such a positive outcome.
Something which sets up this clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to Whitley Bay for the upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
