The culmination to this footballing week will offer Newcastle Blue Star’s main event and although the visit of National League North outfit Marine is then talk of the town, discussions regarding league form have certainly been louder these past few days.
After the highs of dumping Heaton Stannington out of the FA Cup nearly a fortnight ago, Blue Star where then bought back down to Earth on Friday night by West Allotment and just has how Stan were punished for not taking their chances, the Scotswood side were given the same discipline.
Frustration in not only managing to breach West Allotment’s defence but the sucker punch of then conceding from the very last kick of the game. A gut punch for Marc Nash and his players but now the same group must get themselves off the canvas as quick as possible.
Which is where tonight’s activity serves another round of sparring and with Blue Star currently sitting third bottom of the Northern League Division One table, a trip to Northallerton Town will certainly be another test of their character.
Third bottom of the table but still with plenty of games in hand. That in itself offers a slight break in the clouds but at the same time, you cannot be over reliant on such circumstances and especially if those spare games are not converted into wins.
An equation that the Blue Star management team and the team on the field of play will certainly be aware before kick off this evening and with the league table looking so disjointed in terms of who has played what, that like the KD Stadium outfit needs to settle into some form of calibration.
The carrot of the biggest FA Cup clash in the club’s short current history is on Saturday, now its time for the stick of league matters and with Northallerton Town comfortably sitting in midtable, they will be keen to derail knockout preparations even further.
Something which sets up tonight’s clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to Northallerton for the upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
